Why Your Support Matters
-
✽
Nearly 1 in 4 caregivers of neurodiverse children report not feeling part of a community at all. Many describe support groups as difficult to find, hard to join, and nearly impossible to attend regularly. Stigma, exhaustion, and lack of time keep them further isolated — even from others who understand exactly what they're going through.
-
✽
The three most consistently reported challenges for parents of disabled and neurodiverse children are the loss of identity in the caregiving role, deep social isolation, and no time left for their own health and wellbeing. These aren't small inconveniences. They are documented contributors to serious physical and mental health decline.
-
✽
Parents of children with developmental disabilities and autism report significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, guilt, and psychological distress than the general population. That burden deepens when a child exhibits challenging behaviors like aggression, hyperactivity, or defiance — which many caregivers face daily.
-
✽
Caregivers of neurodiverse children are twice as likely to experience financial hardship compared to other families. The more severe a child's disability, the greater the costs — therapy, equipment, assistive technology — and the harder it becomes to maintain full-time work. Financial stress bleeds directly into mental health, quality of life, and the capacity to keep showing up.
-
✽
Caregivers are not just worried about their children. They are worried that their own worsening mental health will eventually compromise their ability to show up for the children who depend on them most.
-
✽
Meaningful relationships and social support are among the most powerful tools for reducing caregiver stress, improving mental health, and building confidence. Yet the very demands of caregiving — navigating complex systems, managing appointments, and meeting a child's daily needs — make building and maintaining those connections incredibly difficult.
The Caregiver Collective exists because the data and the lived experience of families right here in Columbus tell us this community is not a luxury. It is a lifeline.
The research is clear. Without community, without connection, and without rest, caregivers decline — and so does their capacity to care.
